John took his degree at Brasenose College,
Oxford, receiving his BA in 1836 and many years later, his MA in 1867. 6 He was curate of Bekesbourne, Kent 1838-45,
then curate at Lichfield in Hampshire for an unknown period before
being appointed vicar of Hawkley, Hants between 1878 and 1886 but in
between, for about 20 years, he does not seem to have had charge of any
benefice. 7 Unlike many clerics of the period, John
retired at the age of 72 and went to live on the Isle of Wight where he
died at Bonchurch in 1897.
John married Julia Louisa Lamb, daughter of
Revd. George Augustus Lamb, D.D. and Julia Louisa Bancroft, on 25 Apr
1838 in Iden, Sussex.1
