5 Will, William Hoseason - Dated 1 July 1825.
...my general debility leaves me without hope of much longer sustaining life yet still retaining the faculties of a sound mind and memory at the advanced age of sixty three years I do now make publish and declare this as my last Will and Testament intended to be written by my own hand should the present tremulous state of my nerves permit of my doing so in a manner and form as follows...  … If William was 63 years old in the summer of 1825, he was probably born sometime in 1762.

6 Parish Registers of Jamaica, St Catherine's, Jamaica — Marriages. Nov 18 1787... William Hoseason Gent and Miss Maria Hill, spinster, both of this parish. Both Maria & Elizabeth are described as Miss in their marriage entries in the register for St Catherine's parish. This title was not extended to many other brides and seems to indicate that the Hills were a family of some social standing in the parish.

7 Cornwall Chronicle and Jamaica Advertiser (Montego Bay, Jamaica), Supplement — Saturday, December 1, 1787 — Page 1, Col. D. Married ] On Sunday last, in Spanish Town, Mr William Hoseason, to Miss Maria Hill. In the light of this report, one would expect William's and Maria's wedding to have taken place on Sunday, November 25, but it is recorded as having taken place a week earlier on November 18. Perhaps, the Cornwall Chronicle took the report from one that had been published the previous week in another newspaper.

123 J.R.U.Green, Comment Entry. No records have been found that give Harry's year of birth and the General Registry Office Index for 1862 (the year in which he is believed to have died) does not record ages in its death entries. This approximate date of his birth has been assumed, therefore, from the fact that, in all likelihood, he was a few years older than Eliza and that he would have, at least, been in his 20s when he entered the Navy. If the date is more or less correct, he would have retired from the Navy at the age of about 60.

124 H M Admiralty, Navy List (John Murray, Albemarle Street, London), December 1862 edition. Up until this edition of the Navy List, Harry had been shown as a retired Paymaster and Purser. This is the first edition from which his name is absent.

125 Ibid, Editions from April 1840 to December 1862. In the earlier editions Harry's entry is shown under Pursers as:-
Dean Henry..... 8 May '14 [ seniority ] and in later editions under the "Alphabetical List of Officers of the Royal Navy & Royal Marines" as:-
Dean Henry... P [ Purser]... 8 May '14. Though Navy Lists exist from the time that Harry became a purser, it was not until about 1840 that the Navy Lists showed pursers.

146 HM Office for National Statistics, General Register Office Index, Qrt Sep 1902 — Deaths. Hoseason Adeline Anne - 69 - Brentford 3a 56. The Registry Entry gives Adeline's age at death as 69. The India Office biographical record of her family says that she was born in 1835 which would only make her 67 years of age at the time of her death.

Her husband's and her gravestone reads: "In Memory of...
Maj Gen Henry Hoseason born 8th June 1818 died 25th Dec 1895....
Also of his wife Adeline Anne born 17th Mar 1833 died 15th July 1902. Erected by their children."

Perhaps, therefore, the numeral 3 in her year of birth was misread as a 5 when the India Office records were prepared.

Richard Austwick Westbrook, a solicitor, surrendered to take his trial upon coroner's inquisition, for the manslaughter of Jane Janet Cathrey.
In this case it will be remembered that the prisoner has all along asserted that the fatal occurrence was the result of accident and the grand jury ignored the bill for manslaughter that was presented to them.
Mr Orridge, who appeared for the prosecution, said that the charge against the prisoner was undoubtedly one of a very peculiar character, and that in light of the decision that had been arrived at by the grand jury, he did not think himself called upon to offer any evidence to support the coroner's inquisition.
The jury consequently, under his Lordship's direction, returned a verdict of not guilty.

Former Grant gave probate to Harry Mitton Crookenden solicitor and Ethel Maude Hoseason widow. Effects being: £53,065 3s 3d. It is not clear why there was a switch of executors in this case. Usually, such a change occurs because the principal executor is unable to continue to act for one reason or another (mostly ill-health) but this does not appear to have been the situation here.
